Well log interpretation: Will the machines take over our jobs?

A report from the 56th annual symposium of the Society of Petrophysists and Well Log Analysts (SPWLA).

This year I was representing DrillWell at the 56th annual symposium of the Society of Petrophysists and Well Log Analysts. Not many conferences have a long enough history to have such a question in their registration form:

"Have you been a president of the society?"

Quite a few past presidents were around who started the society back in the days. In fact, the conference was an interesting blend of people. From one side, unique field specialists who trained their (human) neural network over the years to read and interpret logs by simply looking at them. From the other, the cutting edge researchers and service providers who are training their artificial neural networks to interpret ever-increasing amounts of data that is streamed continuously from wells around the world.

Many technical presentations tried to narrow the gap between the different communities. The conference also featured educational workshops that, among other things, were trying to emphasize that modeling and automatic interpretation is not there to replace the field specialists but to make their work more efficient and robust. For me, participation in the workshops gave a better understanding of current industrial practices and research challenges in the field of log interpretation, and also gave the opportunity to create new contacts with knowledgeable and interesting people.
