On Friday Ferbruary 2nd Reza Askarinezhad successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis at UiS: “Produced Water Management – Chemical Water Shutoff and Disproportionate Permeability Reduction”

Dr. Reza Askarinezhad his PhD research was part of the DrillWell Program 3 (P3.4) - chemical water shut-off and in cooperation with our IOR group.

- The significance of this research is that there are environmentally friendly chemicals that are technically suitable to control unwanted water production, Dr. Askarinezhad explains.

Production of unwanted water from oil and gas wells is an increasingly serious problem with negative economic, environmental, and operational consequences. Therefore, the subject of produced water management is an ever important and crucial issue in the petroleum industry.

Although chemical water shutoff techniques are not new and have been applied in numerous wells/fields worldwide, challenges related to environmental constraints, fluid production patterns, and various formation types dictate the use of innovative approaches for new cost-effective solutions in high water-cut wells.

This work aims to contribute to the past and ongoing research efforts and to provide related results advancing scientific knowledge in this area. This project addresses the use of chemicals to control/ minimize the production of unwanted water. The work is primarily experimental based, with the results evaluated and discussed to provide a physical reasoning. Relevant theoretical analyses are also performed.

The main focus of this work is the use of environmentally friendly chemicals to achieve the stated goals; new chemical systems and an innovative method of treatment are proposed. The work is performed for different formation types, fractured vs. non-fractured at different wettability conditions.
