NorTex Data Science Cluster Workshop: Plug & Abandonment

The workshop was arranged by IRIS and the Global Center of Expertise NODE and hosted by the Royal Norwegian Consulate in Houston.

NorTex Data Science Cluster is connected to DrillWell and SFI offshore Mechatronics.

The initiative is part of the NorTex Data Science Cluster project which was awarded funding by the Norwegian Research Council late last year. The project is a collaboration between Norway and Texas. IRIS is managing the project where GCE NODE is a partner together with The University of Agder, Rice University and The University of Texas at Austin.

The NorTex Data Science Cluster project goal is to establish a cluster/network within Offshore Data Analytics related to Drilling & Well Technology including P&A operations. The cluster/network aims to bring together businesses, universities and research institutions interested in furthering drilling & well technology. The project shall also develop education through cooperation and facilitate the establishment of joint research projects between industrial, academic and research partners. The project includes arranging seminars/workshops which are planned held during OTC in Houston and ONS in Stavanger.

Permanent P&A operations have so far received little attention however we are now facing the start of a “P&A wave” that will last for many decades. In the workshop we plan on addressing both requirements (quality) with respect to permanent abandonment and challenges that need to be addressed to ensure high quality at a reasonable cost.
