DrillWell at OMAE 2017

The 36th International Conference on Ocean, Offshore and Arctic Engineering (OMAE 2017) was held in Trondheim, Norway from June 25th to June 30th 2017.

OMAE is a large international conference that is organized as 12 separate symposia, with up to 15 concurrent sessions. DrillWell was well represented with many presentations at the Petroleum Technology Symposium, including a special session dedicated to DrillWell.

Professor Andrew Wojtanowicz from Louisiana State University is chair of the Petroleum Technology Symposium as well as a member of DrillWell's Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC). He was pleased with the DrillWell contributions to OMAE 2017 and he also said that "The quality of the presentations at the Petroleum Technology Symposium this year was higher than previously."

Special session: "Advances through the Research Centre DrillWell"
The special session from DrillWell, which was initiated and chaired by Jan David Ytrehus (SINTEF), consisted of the following papers:

- Hans Joakim Skadsem (IRIS) presented "Casing centralization in irregular wellbores"

- John Emeka Udegbunam (UiS) presented "A transient flow model for predicting pressure buildup in closed annuli"

- Bjørnar Lund (SINTEF) presented "Experimental investigation of wellbore fluid displacement in concentric and eccentric annulus"

- Ragnhild Skorpa (SINTEF) presented "Improved laboratory set-up for pressurized and confined cement sheath integrity tests"

- Eric Cayeux (IRIS) presented "Modelling of the dynamic behavior of the power transmission of an automatic small scale drilling rig"

In addition to this special DrillWell session, PhD student Dalila Gomes (UiS) presented the paper "Probabilistic flow modelling approach for kick tolerance calculations". Furthermore, a workshop on "Well plugging and abandonment" was co-chaired by Mahmoud Khalifeh (UiS) as part of the Petroleum Technology Symposium.
