The annual DrillWell technical seminar – Day 1
22.09.2015
More than 30 DrillWell researchers, clients and cooperative partners were gathered at Sola Strand Hotel on September 22-23 for the annual DrillWell seminar.
Read about Day 2 of the seminar.
They were all invited by DrillWell manager Sigmund Stokka, who opened the seminar by welcoming their new DrillWell board Chairman Stein Børre Torp from Statoil.
Presentations were given from all the three DrillWell programs, both by DrillWell researchers and by representatives from the clients. IRIS-researcher Jan Einar Gravdal, session chair of Programme 1; Safe and efficient operations for cost reduction, introduced Jan Ole Skogestad from Sintef to open session P1. Skogestad presented findings on practical implications of HPHT drilling fluid characterization results.
Thereafter, Eric Cayeux from IRIS presented the “Drilling Operation Planning Tool”. This is an innovative software solution which now is ready for a “test of concept” by the companies. Cayeux continued by presenting the “Operational transient cuttings model” which has been used to evaluate cuttings transport during drilling. The results show that this model is able to calculate the amount of cuttings in suspension and the formation of cuttings bed in real time, which can have a large cost-saving potential.
After a short break, Arild Saasen from Det Norske talked about “The influence of primary solids control equipment on drilling fluid rheological properties”. Following Saasen, his colleague Olav-Magne Nes presented “Time dependent borehole stability” and the effect of static versus dynamic mud weight.
Fredrik Varpe from Statoil
How to build a strong R&D portfolio was the theme of Fredrik Varpe’s presentation. He is the leader of R&D, at the department of Well Construction & Intervention in Statoil.
The second session was covering Programme 2; “Drilling Solutions for Improved Recovery” and was chaired by Anouar Romdhane who introduced Sergey Alyaev as the first speaker.
Erich Suter and Sergey Alyaev, both research scientists from IRIS
Dr. Alyaev went through a very good and interesting presentation on “An ensemble-based workflow for proactive geosteering”. Per Atle Olsen from Statoil followed up on the same topic with an interesting presentation from the operational side on Statoil’s use of ultra-deep look around LWD measurements.
Then it was time for the PhD students of DrillWell to demonstrate what they have been working on lately. Erich Suter (IRIS) gave a demonstration of complex local updates of earth model structure. Kanokwan Kullawan (UiS) talked about automated geosteering with lookahead decision-making, and how to optimize your well placement and save costs. Last but not least, Yi Liu (NTNU) talked about Data-driven deep local imaging using both surface and borehole seismic data.
