Well in line with industry challenges
27.09.2018
Day two of the annual seminar showed that DrillWell’s research on cementing and P&A is well in line with the challenges that the industry is facing.
DrillWell board member Harald Linga from SINTEF welcomed the delegates on day two and moderated the rest of the seminar that had a special focus on Cementing and P&A.
Harald Linga, SINTEF.
Linga introduced the first speaker of day two, Ragnhild Skorpa from SINTEF who presented
Cement sheath integrity during pressure cycling
. Skorpa showed that SINTEF have successfully built a downscaled set-up where they are able to get reproducible results for pressure tests. Skorpa also showed that SINTEF have studied the effect of rock stiffness and standoff on cement sheath integrity and that the effect of rock is more important compared to the effect of standoff.

After Skorpa Morten Ivar Andersen from Archer and Dave Gardner from NORCE talked about
Cement performance evaluation testing with a new broad spectrum acoustic tool.
Halliburton’s Gunnar Lende presented
Annular cement integrity test cell
, which is a joint test project with Equinor. The purpose of the test was to make a model for the response of annular pipe-pipe cement, measure leakage rates, estimate size of micro annulus, quantify effective radial shrinkage effects, document effect on expansion, investigate bonding strength and the control line.
After a coffee break Axel-Pierre Bois, CEO Curistec entered the stage. He gave a great presentation on
Cement integrity modelling.

PhD student at NTNU, Anisa Noor Corina presented
Effect of casing surface roughness on cement plug sealing ability
and after Corina Øystein Arild from NORCE talked about
P&A leakage risk assessment
. Arild explained the new definition of risk and focused on how we can quantify the leakage probability.
After lunch Philippe Tardy from Schlumberger presented
Modeling annular displacements of wellbore completion fluids
. Among others Tardy concluded that novel models allow solving 3D flows at a lower cost than 3D simulations.
NORCE’s Hans Joakim Skadsem presented
Full-scale cementing experiments in an irregular annulus geometry
. Observations and results: Successful displacement and cement placement in very narrow geometries, washout does not result in observable cement contamination after the washout for waterbased systems, good qualitative agreement between simulations and experiments and leakage primarily through channels at the top of cement in annulus and in tubing.

Post doc, Mahmoud Khalifeh from UiS wrapped up the last seminar day with
SafeRock as an alternative to cement for zonal isolation and P&A – opportunities and barriers
. The SafeRock is a new material that is an alternative to cement.

DrillWell Director Sigmund Stokka.
At the end of day two DrillWell Director, Sigmund explained his thrill with this year’s seminar. “I think it has been a very successful seminar with good presentations and proof of great interaction between researchers and the industry”, he said. Stokka also pointed out that he would like a broader club of oil companies – maybe ten instead of just four. DrillWell will run until September 2019 with funds from The Norwegian Research Council. After that he hopes for a new phase funded only by the industry partners.
The audience expressed that their expectations were met in full. Both new and experienced delegates said that the seminar is well in line with the challenges in the industry.
