More precise guidelines for hole cleaning

IRIS is carrying out a study on hole cleaning for Statoil. The goal is better and more precise guidelines for hole cleaning.

Proper hole-cleaning is essential to avoid potential drilling incidents, such as stuck-pipe or pack off situations. On the other hand, circulating longer than necessary constitutes hidden non-productive time.

Finding a good balance
General guidelines specify time for cleaning the well without considering actual hole conditions. This causes risk of continuing the cleaning process longer than necessary, and thereby wasting time and money.

- Instead of fixed guidelines, we are looking at guidelines for sufficient hole cleaning. By finding the right balance, guidelines can better indicate when the cleaning process is completed, says senior research engineer at IRIS Gunnstein Sælevik.

DrillWell spin-off
A transient cuttings transport model, developed in DrillWell, is used in the project. The model predicts in real time the forming and degradation of cuttings beds and the transport of cuttings in suspension. In this project simulations from the model are compared with replays from drilling operations in eight well sections.

- By comparing simulations with the replays, lessons can be learned about how changes in different parameters indicate trouble ahead. This means Statoil can use their existing software for predicting and avoiding potential drilling incidents, says Sælevik.
