Dave Gardner, Senior Business Developer at IRIS, presented ongoing P&A research in DrillWell at a workshop in Houston.

DrillWell presented at OTC

11.05.2016

The 48th OTC in Houston Texas proved a success for IRIS with great interest for Virtual Arena, DrillWell, IRIS, UBBS and P&A activities.

Last week 68000 people gathered for the 48th Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) in Houston. The delegates from IRIS had a packed program with workshops, meetings, receptions, seminar and exhibition stand.

Two workshops
The first of two workshops "Digitalization & Integrated Operation – Drilling & Well Technology" gathered nearly 50 participants from oil companies, oil service companies, research institutions and universities, among others. Jan Einar Gravdal from IRIS presented Virtual Arena, and there was a lot of interest for the project, and several US universities welcome the infrastructure when it's ready for use.

The workshop was a collaboration between IRIS and GCE NODE, and an initiative through The NorTex Data Science Cluster project which is awarded funding by the Norwegian Research Council. IRIS is managing the project where GCE NODE is a partner together with The University of Agder, Rice University and The University of Texas at Austin. The project is working to bring together business, universities and research institutions, and aims to grow from its current size of five partners.

The second workshop was also arranged by IRIS and GCE NODE, and this time the topic was "Plug and abandonment (P&A)". Again the quality of the presentations were high, and it was a good atmosphere with many participants joining the discussion with questions and input. Dave Gardner and Øystein Arild organized the workshop, which was held at the Royal Norwegian Consulate and gathered approximately 30 participants. Among the presentations were one on ongoing P&A research in DrillWell.

Represented on the Norwegian Pavilion
For the first time IRIS was part of the Norwegian pavilion organised by GCE NODE, which worked well. In addition to two interesting workshops, IRIS employees met with oil companies and attended receptions and company visits.

After returning from Houston there are a number of new contacts to follow up on. Several smaller companies working with technology development want to be kept informed of progress. Hopefully some of these new contacts will result in cooperation in future cooperation.
