DrillWell tested three models for analyzing drilling data by using historic data from the Ivar Aasen field.

The general finding of the study showed that there was a good match between the mathematical models used in DrillWell and the actual historic measurements provided by AkerBP. It was a 12¼“ section: 1537m-3919 m MD drilled between December 20th and 23rd in 2015 at Ivar Aasen 16/1-D-16.

The study was performed as part of the project P1.3 “Drilling Process Optimization”, which is a part of DrillWells’ research programme 1 with focus on safe and efficient drilling operations for cost reduction and was presented on August 14th by senior scientist at IRIS, Liv Carlsen.
    
DrillWell has developed and tested mathematical models for monitoring and analyzing the:

1.       Hydraulic pressure in the well
2.       The mechanics of the drilling string
3.       Cuttings transport

Alf Sævland from AkerBP, one of DrillWell's industrial partners attended the presentation and said: "Digital modeling of wells during drilling operations generates increased insight into what is going on in the well and offers operators new opportunities to streamline the entire drilling operation. DrillWell have developed several advanced mathematical models for well modeling that will save costs and improve safety for oil companies in the long run."

Chief scientist in the drilling and Well Modelling group at IRIS, Eric Cayeux explains that the studied section had some problems with the casing string while running in hole that caused delays for the drilling operation. With this study, DrillWell wanted to investigate whether there were any indications that poor cuttings transport was at the origin of the problem.

​The study could conclude that neither the predictions made with the transient cuttings transport model, nor the observations made during the operation (pit volume variations due to cuttings separation at the shakers, annulus hydraulic frictions extracted from downhole annulus pressure measurements, mechanical frictions obtained from pick-up/slack-off weights and free rotating torques) tended to indicate any problems with hole cleaning. This finding led the scientists to start investigating another possible cause to the problem: mechanically induced borehole instabilities.

​"Such examples from real drilling operations are very useful for our research because they help us to verify newly developed mathematical models but also because they trigger new lines of investigations that can lead to a better understanding of the intricate problems related to drilling operations”, Eric Cayeux concludes.
