Site Visit by the Research Council

03.06.2016

How can knowledge and value created in DrillWell live on when the centre is finished? This was among the subjects discussed when the Research Council of Norway visited DrillWell.

Three representatives from The Research Council of Norway (RCN) visited DrillWell on 2 June. On the agenda was centre status, updates and a guided tour to Ullrigg.

At a regular basis RCN visits host institutions of Centres for Research-based Innovation (SFIs). Site visits are an informal meeting for discussing status, various issues and the way forward.

- We are interested in how the centre is doing, how they are responding to the midway evaluation and their plans after the SFI is finished, says special adviser at RCN Liv Jorunn Jenssen.

Planning for life after DrillWell
DrillWell was established in 2011, and is now over halfway through the allotted period of eight years. A central issue during the site visit was plans for how to make sure knowledge and values gained in DrillWell aren’t lost after 2019.

- We are concerned with plans for taking care of the values created within the centre. At the same time, we emphasize that the centre keeps up the pace till the finishing line, says Jenssen.

Helga Gjeraldstveit from IRIS and DrillWell presented innovations in DrillWell, which shows that DrillWell is making good progress with several spin-offs, some of which are already commercialised.

Kristin Flornes, representing IRIS in the Board, expressed the importance of both generating results that can be used by the industry and writing journal papers documenting the scientific quality of the work.

On the right track
DrillWell is in its fifth year as a SFI, and is moving from phase 1 to 2. The goal is to contribute significantly to improved and cost efficient drilling and well technology. There are already several promising results within the centre, like cuttings transport, hook load correction and P&A (Plug & Abandonment).

Manager of DrillWell, Sigmund Stokka, emphasizes the importance of support from RCN.

- They give good advises which are really helpful. It's clear we have a common interest in the success of the centre. This site visit shows that DrillWell is on the right track, he says.

In addition to representatives from RCN and IRIS, chairman of DrillWell, Stein Børre Torp from Statoil, Harald Linga from SINTEF, Øystein Lund Bø from the University of Stavanger attended.
