DrillWell Technical seminar - day 1

28.09.2016

The annual DrillWell seminar at Sola Strand Hotel gathered more than 80 participants, making it the largest seminar since the start of DrillWell.

The first day of the seminar was filled with very good presentations on Cementing and Plug & Abandonment (P&A), moderated by Kristin Flornes, Senior Vice President, IRIS Energy.

Manager of  DrillWell, Sigmund Stokka, welcomed researchers, clients and cooperating partners from DrillWell partners as well as associated partners. For the first time, participants from outside DrillWell were invited to the seminar.

To put the audience in the right mood, Helga Gjeraldstveit, Research Director at IRIS, gave an inspirational presentation on innovation from DrillWell and asked what is needed to be the best. She emphasised that DrillWell has a good infrastructure, and has already resulted in several spin offs and KPI´s for innovation that have had a large impact for the end users resulting in cost savings.

Chairman of the DrillWell board, Stein Børre Torp from Statoil, held an excellent key note speech “R&D – Need for innovations in well construction”. There is still large oil and gas reserves left on the Norwegian continental shelf and reduced drilling and completion costs is essential to increase profitability. Torp pointed out areas for innovation in well construction, for instance drilling automation, an area which Statoil is working on.

Next, Lars Hovda from ConocoPhillips, presented “Qualifying shale as a barrier”. His presentation was on P&A challenges and efforts by ConocoPhillips, and in particular the interest on using shale as a barrier.

“Results from displacement experiments in irregular annulus geometries” was the title of the presentation given by Bjørnar Lund from SINTEF. He presented displacement experiments on regular and irregular wellbore sections conducted on SINTEF’s lab in Trondheim.

Next presenter was Ian Frigaard from University of British Columbia who talked about “Modelling of cement displacement”. He showed the theory called “The yield stress miracle”.

Jip van Eijden from Shell Global Solutions presented “Development of qualification set-up and procedure for testing zonal isolation and well abandonment materials”. He talked about zonal isolation functional test performed with Shell.

Next up was Dave Gardner from IRIS, whose topic was “Test facilities for cement evaluation”. He presented the plans for a newly started project in DrillWell which will make use of the cased sections from the “Tubing left in hole”, that have been conducted at IRIS at an earlier DrillWell activity.

“P&A challenges from a service company perspective” was the title of the presentation from Per Arild Boganes from Halliburton. He stressed the importance of early involvement, and that service companies are invited to join projects early.

After a short break, the program continued with Will Orwell and Scott Ingram from Baker Hughes. They presented “Well barrier logging testing”, and showed results from their DrillWell testing project at IRIS Ullrigg, where they established reference conditions for cement logging.

Amit Govil from Schlumberger presented “Cement evaluation PWC (Perforate Wash & Cement) . Govil explained different types of cement evaluation measurements and showed some of their benefits and limitations.

The second last presenter on day one was Hans-Erik Olsen from Wintershall who presented the experiences from Wintershall´s P&A campaign on the Murchison field. He talked about problems they had to deal with underway and important lessons learned from the campaign.

Last presentation of the day was Johannes Sæstad from Island Offshore on “Subsea wells, P&A operations using  lighter vessels”. Island offshore currently has 3 light vessels for P&A operations, and has a larger vessel currently under construction which will extend the season of operation in the North Sea.
